About

Gordon has been teaching music in Edinburgh since 1996 and has worked in various settings, including his own Edinburgh workshops for flute and whistles.

A founder member of FluteFling, which seeks to revive and promote the flute in traditional Scottish music settings, Gordon previously ran traditional music classes for the Scots Music Group and workshops for The Border Gaitherin’ in Coldstream and Fèis Fhoirt in Callander. FluteFling evolved out of The Flow, Gordon’s website on Irish flute and whistle playing, and has become a principal focus of his flute and whistle teaching.

Gordon has performed in various line-ups, including The Big Squeeze Ceilidh Band, offshoot The Wee Squeeze and collective Cauldstane Slap, which released an album, St Kilda Son, in 2020. He also played in festivals across Europe with Irish dance group Absolutely Legless.

A teacher of music in ASN schools, Gordon has led creative music projects in hospitals and schools exploring stories, nature and place, Scottish Border Ballads and Scottish Border Abbeys (Fragments of Red schools outreach project); projects were run for East Lothian Council, Artlink Central, Archaeology Scotland, Historic Scotland and Portobello Music School.

He has been a tutor for RCS Musicworks outreach programme and is an associate tutor with the University of the Highlands and Islands. Gordon has been published in the British Flute Society’s journal FLUTE (now PAN) and in Music Education UK.
